What makes a locking gas spring different
A locking gas spring can lock its piston rod at any point in the stroke. A plunger linked to the rod triggers the locking mechanism: press the plunger and the rod moves freely; release it and the rod locks where it is.
Inside are the piston rod, piston valve, cylinder, guide and seals; the force comes from nitrogen and oil in the cylinder.
Medical equipment
Hospital beds
Back angle and bed height adjustment, so patients and nurses can set a comfortable position and lock it.
Operating and delivery tables
Precise angle adjustment with stable locking so nothing moves during a procedure.
Dental chairs and examination couches
Backrest and footrest angle adjustment to keep the patient comfortable during treatment.

Office and furniture
Office chair height adjustment is the most common use: press the lever, set the height, release and it locks. Locking gas springs are also used in adjustable desks, recliners and sofa beds.
Transport
Passenger seat recline and driver seat height and angle adjustment. On buses and trains, locking gas springs let seats take frequent adjustment while staying stable.

Q: Locking or non-locking?
If the part must stay put in use (chair height, bed angle), choose a locking gas spring. If it only needs help opening and closing (lids, tailgates), a non-locking gas spring is enough.
